Now, Firaxis will take this incredibly fun and addictive strategy game to new heights by adding new ways to play and win, new tools to manage and expand your civilization, unprecedented modding capabilities and intensely competitive multiplayer options. Civilization V will come to life in a beautifully detailed, living world that will elevate the gameplay experience to a whole new level making it a must-have for gamers around the globe!

In Civilization, players strive to become Ruler of the World by establishing and leading a civilization from the dawn of man into the space age waging war, conducting diplomacy, discovering technologies, going head-to-head with some of history's greatest leaders, and building the most powerful empire the world has ever known.

The player leads a civilization from prehistoric times into the future on a randomly-generated map or a pre-determined map, scenario or mod (player created modification), achieving one of a number of different victory conditions through research, diplomacy, expansion, economic development, government and military conquest. The game is based on an entirely new game engine with hexagonal tiles instead of the square tiles of earlier games in the series. Some elements from Civilization IV and its expansion packs have been removed or changed, such as religion and espionage. The combat system has been overhauled, removing stacking of military units and enabling cities to defend themselves by firing directly on nearby enemies. In addition, the maps contain computer-controlled city-states that are available for trade, diplomacy and conquest. A civilization's borders also expand more realistically, favouring more productive terrain, and the concept of roads and railroads has changed so they now cost maintenance to cut down on "road-spam".
